Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the option to contest particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
