TikTok Offers Users Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to lessen the amount of AI-created content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global release. This advancement coincides with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by recent content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content made with AI tools, ranging from digital art to science explainers, and we aim to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 million videos are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they watch by accessing the content preference feature in the application and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be modified under the setting include current affairs, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies require users to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

In addition, the service will henceforth add an “AI-made” label to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This measure is intended to deter users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also launching a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and organizations to create informative material about ethical AI use. This program will benefit charitable organizations dedicated to training programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, following debate over plans to make redundant a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is planning to eliminate 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals expressing worry that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by humans. The platform stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
